In a shocking turn of events on September 23rd in the Canadian port of Montreal, a container fire incident once again spotlighted the perils associated with lithium batteries. A container holding a staggering 15,000 kilograms of lithium-ion batteries erupted in flames, sending thick plumes of smoke billowing for hours and triggering a level two alarm.

The first reports of the fire came in around 2:20 PM local time. Shortly after, the city issued an alert, urging residents around the port to stay indoors. They were instructed to close their doors and windows and shut down their ventilation systems. As a precautionary measure, between 50 to 100 residents were also evacuated from their homes. The power in the area was cut off.

Fire officials stated that extinguishing the fire was extremely difficult due to the nature of the batteries and the concern of it evolving into a go out of control chemical situation. Reportedly, more than 100 firefighters responded to this two-level fire. The CBC indicated that they had to borrow a special drill from the city’s airport fire department to access the container.

Relevant agencies revealed that the burning container contained approximately 15,000 kilograms of lithium batteries. A report showed that the container was from Poland and bound for Windsor, Canada, though it remains unclear when it arrived.

By around 7 PM, after the fire was brought under control, the stay-at-home order was lifted, but the fire continued to burn throughout the night. The blaze was finally extinguished at 7 AM on Tuesday, September 24th. The Montreal port team is investigating the fire, and a special team is handling the removal of the materials.
